10 Steps to a Perfect Web Design Every Time
Creating a consistent website design every time can be hit and miss if you don’t have the right process. Business processes create uniformity and predictable results. The master of processes is McDonalds. They literally have thought of everything, all the way down to how to place the pickle. What if you could create a great looking website with as consistent results as a McDonalds hamburger.
Well, the good new is you can! Space Chimp is an expert in professional creative web design. In order to continue to give back to businesses online we wanted to publish a web design process that will provide a consistently awesome website every time. Unfortunately, this process isn’t magic. If you suck as a designer than there is no process that is going to help you. Sorry but someone had to say it.
The Perfect Web Design Process
Step 1. Questionnaire
Do some research online for questions to ask your clients. A great place to get some pre-made web design questionnaires is Docstoc.
Here are some points your questionnaire should cover:
- Company Background
- Style, Design, Theme
- List of Example Sites You Like
- Hosting Needs
Step 2. Project Discovery Meeting
Once your client has filled out the questionnaire you will need to go over the details and ask any appropriate questions. The more insight you get from the client the better you will be able to design to their tastes. Remember, often times clients aren’t as design savvy as you may be so its important to make sure they expand on their remarks until you truly understand their wants.
Step 3. Wireframes
In this phase you create the web pages in black and white. You’ll need to fight your desire to add color in this phase. You want your clients to focus on the layout over the actual colors and styling. Try using a program like Balsamic if you are new to wireframes.
Step 4. Home Page Design
Once you get approval from the client. You will want to begin the hi-fidelity design of the home page. Here is where you will flush out colors, textures, button styles, etc. This styling will be used throughout the website so its important you get the home page exactly the way you want it.
Step 5. Interior Page Design
After you have designed the home page you will then design all the interior pages needed. Layout how your content should look on the pages. Work with your copywriter to create a cohesive design. Content design and web design should be a fluid process instead of two disjointed efforts. Ensuring you work together will create a much more polished product.
Step 6. Development Requirements
Good news. You’re in the home stretch. Make sure the developer knows all the functionality needed for the website. Mark out all the important content blocks and add any notes the developer will need directly on the mockup or in a separate document. Be specific. If you developer is clear on your needs, development will be completed much quicker.
Step 7. Start Web Development
Package up all your design files and fonts. Be organized. The more organized your files are the quicker your developer will be able to slice out design assets.
Step 8. Quality Assurance Testing
Woohoo! Your website is back from development. Click through the website and make sure everything looks right. Make sure to check in all web browsers and mobile devices. If you are using a CMS, which we obviously strongly suggest, make sure the functionality works the way it should on the backend as well.
Step 9. Final Review
Now that you are sure the website is exactly the way it should be, send the website staging url to your client.
Step 10. Migration
Once the client has approved the website, migrate over the website and database.
That’s it. If you follow these steps you should get a great website every time.
